Unit Summary

Health Information Technology Services (HITS) is a service based business unit delivering healthcare IT solutions to Hamilton Health Sciences and various healthcare partners. The HITS team uses technical expertise to offer practical, sustainable and high quality solutions to the Hospital, supporting HHS in achieving our vision of Best Care for All.

As part of the Hamilton Health Sciences' Digital Health Plan, the Hospital is embarking upon a new and exciting transformational journey with the introduction of an enterprise-wide Health Information System using the Epic HIS system. This HIS initiative and associated process redesign will play a significant foundational role as a catalyst for an improved patient care at HHS.

We are looking for someone for the key role of Training Manager for the hospital’s Epic Project Team and be a part of this exciting Hospital Information System (HIS) implementation project. This individual will then delivery the ongoing training strategy post implementation, contributing to the evolution of our clinical and business systems, with the ultimate goal of improving high quality care for all.

Position Summary

As a member of HHS’ HITS Leadership Team, the Training Manager will coordinate the end-user training and support of the Hospital’s HIS implementation, and will develop and manage ongoing training delivery of EPIC in coordination with HITS and Operations. Reporting to HITS’ Director, Clinical Informatics, with accountability to the Project Director for the duration of the HIS project, the training manager is responsible for overall coordination and management of training activities and trainers; the implementation of the Epic end‐user training and support program; the ongoing education and maintenance of the training program after go‐live. This includes determining training resources; securing facilities and equipment for classroom training; determining curriculum delivery methods; oversees the creation and maintenance of the training environment; creates course catalogs and training schedules.
High Level Accountabilities include:

  • Direct and manage the training requirements for the new HIS
  • Secure and manage the various training resources and schedules
  • Manage the HIS training team and training system
  • Develop and execute the Credentialed Trainer program
  • Develop training plan for the HIS end-user training and competency criteria
  • Create post-live training plans for new hires, refresher training, optimization and system upgrade training.
  • Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations

Schedule Work Hours

Monday –
Friday, 7.5 hours per day (flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required)


1. Undergraduate Degree in Education, Nursing, or a related field, Master degree preferred
2. Ability to lead others and to communicate the importance of training to all stakeholders
3. Experience with project management, adult education, and curriculum delivery
4. Strong organizational and coordination skills; ability to sequence activities logically
5. Ability to develop and adhere to time schedules in order to meet project deadlines
6. Interpersonal skills to function well in administrative, management, and patient care environments, including staff that have a wide range of seniority
7. Strongly desired: Experience with technology or healthcare
8. Strongly desired: Existing knowledge of organizational culture, personnel, and processes
9. Knowledge of and the ability to use PC-based word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software to create teaching and learning materials and documentation
10. Excellent knowledge of English grammar and spelling for use in both verbal and written communication
11. Working knowledge of typical hospital structures, including clinical, administrative and engineering practices.
12. Knowledge or hospital regulatory requirements such as the protection of PHI, Infection Control, WHMIS, etc.
13. Depending on restrictions during COVID, travel may be required. A passport and willingness to travel when safe to do so, is required
