Operations Supervisor, Mine Site

This position works a fly in/fly out rotation (up to 28 days in/28 days out) – flying to and from the Saint Hubert Airport in Montreal.

Transportation to and from the Saint Hubert airport will be the responsibility of the employee awarded the position.

Transportation to and from the mine site will be arranged by Baffinland Mine Site.

About the Position: In conjunction with the Mine Site lab Manager, this position is responsible for overall operations of Mine Site Lab to achieve budgeted financial performance while ensuring adherence to ALS practices and policies on safety, compliance, quality assurance and staffing/operations.

Specific Responsibilities
  • In conjunction with the Manager, assist in all aspects of the laboratory facility including production, workflow coordination, troubleshooting and sample logistics;
  • Ensure productivity requirements are achieved in a safe and sustainable manner;
  • Assist Manager in meeting or exceeding all financial targets; including ROS, EBIT, Net Revenue and TEC;
  • Effectively manage human resources on site including recruiting, performance management, employee relations, attendance promotion and staff scheduling;
  • Promote a safety culture by communicating and upholding ALS Group health, safety & environment policies and programs;
  • Responsible for ensuring sample quality and supporting all quality program mandates including routine checks, resolving quality issues in a timely manner; participating in audits and maintaining all required quality documentation;
  • Personally, exemplify the ALS core values and fosters a workplace culture that reflects these values;
  • Actively encourage and support employee engagement through corporately developed or local initiatives and solicits employee input on making ALS a great place to work;
  • Responsible for ensuring that the client service provided is consistent and of high quality;
  • Complies with all internal systems and procedures of the Company as well as Baffinland OHS&E rules and regulations.
  • Required to pass Mine Site Safety testing.
  • Work closely
with Baffinland Travel department to ensure proper flight schedule for staff.
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written communication skills;
    • Proven leadership and interpersonal skills;
    • Demonstrated judgment, creativity, integrity and ability to problem solve;
    • Strong safety and quality service attitude and approach to work;
    • Excellent computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suites;
    • Ability to effectively handle escalations, time critical issues, and work under pressure with strict deadlines;
    • Detail-oriented, results-focused, and strong organization skills.
    Required Qualifications

    • A BSc. Or MSc. Degree in Chemistry or related field, or equivalent education or relevant experience;
    • Demonstrated and relevant laboratory experience, ideally up to 2 years in a geochemical laboratory;
    • Experience in a management or leadership role;
    • Familiarity with all applicable legislation and regulations.
    Physical Demands

    • This position requires mobility to lift, pull, sit and/or stand for up to 12 hours per day.
    • Must be able to work on shift schedule of up to 28 days in/28 days out.
    • Ability to work in a dusty environment;
    • Manual dexterity to perform repetitive technical tasks;
    • Must be able to regularly lift up to 14 kg.
    • Ability to lift up to 22 kg. (occasionally lifting may exceed 22 kg. and assistance is mandatory from either another employee or the lift assist equipment);
    • Be cleanly-shaven in order to wear protective equipment.
