Job Overview

The Manager, Accessibility and Workplace Safety is responsible for the delivery of Wawanesa’s Accessibility and Workplace Health and Safety Programs for all offices in Canada and where necessary in the United States. This is a unique opportunity to join a well-established organization to build and manage the accessibility and safety function and have a strategic impact on our accessibility and safety culture. Working under the supervision of the Director, Facilities, the Manager, Accessibility and Workplace Safety is an experienced subject matter expert who understands the complexities of applicable health and safety and accessibility laws, and the importance of partnering with key business team members to develop, implement and support the operation of workplace safety and accessibility programs across the enterprise.

Job Responsibilities

In conjunction with local office management teams and other enterprise support groups, develops, implements, and oversees the operation of policies, processes and procedures to address workplace health and safety and accessibility requirements

Consults with internal and external subject matter experts when new legal or regulatory requirements develop, in order to identify and implement new or changed policies, processes and procedures

Reviews applicable laws and regulations governing workplace health and safety and accessibility, and providing advice and support on requirements to local office Workplace Safety Committees, as well as local office management teams, including Regional Vice Presidents

Supports and provides recommendations on accessibility and workplace safety matters at all levels of the organization

Manages related internal and external safety & environmental systems for the company and its clients

Serves as a cross-functional resource for accessibility requirements as they relate to members of the public, employees and third parties

Leads the development of new or revised communications content and training on workplace health and safety and accessibility issues

In partnership with the Corporate Compliance
team, investigates workplace health and safety incidents, conducts a root cause analysis, and provides recommendations for review by applicable leaders

Partners with Health & Wellness on initiatives and programs related to COVID-19

Manages emergency procedures (such as fire alarm drills) and organizes emergency teams such as fire marshals and first aiders

In conjunction with local office team members, establishes and executes incident reporting and review processes to address applicable requirements

Proactively recommends changes to work environments to mitigate workplace safety and accessibility risks

Develops key workplace safety and accessibility performance metrics, and monitors and reports on performance against them

Acts as a valued contributor the Facilities team

Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field

Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation preferred

5+ years of experience in a similar role

A high level of subject matter knowledge and technical expertise as it relates to workplace safety and accessibility requirements

Ability to apply skills to continuous process improvement

A positive attitude and high degree of sensitivity and confidentiality in dealing with employee information

Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities

Strong planning, organizational and follow up skills

Excellent people and process management skills

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, time management, problem solving and conflict resolution skills

A self-starter, having self-discipline and the ability to work under minimal supervision.

Highly collaborative and able to be a valued team player

Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word – Word, Excel, outlook)

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct detailed analysis of information, and to select and implement best solutions in a timely manner

Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate at the right level for the audience and present information or arguments in a convincing manner

Excellent planning and organizing skills, with the ability to develop and prioritize effective plans that define activities, resources and timelines

Excellent attention to detail with the ability to influence key relationships
