Job Description:

Reporting to the Foreman, the Powerline Technician (PLT) will be responsible for constructing, maintaining and repairing overhead and underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems.

This position is located in the Fort McMurray, AB area on a client site.

Working Conditions

  • 14 days on and 7 days off shift

  • Camp provided

  • Overtime as needed

  • Work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Working in and around heavy equipment

  • Hazard awareness

  • Personal Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc.

  • Install, repair, troubleshoot and maintain overhead and underground power lines, substation and related apparatus.

  • Construct, operate, inspect installs and maintain street lighting systems, including poles, relays, lamps, ballasts.

  • Perform line maintenance in a safe and efficient manner utilizing de-energized techniques.

  • Perform system switching, ensuring adherence to EOS and necessary clearances/permits are obtained.

  • Erect and maintain steel, wood or concrete poles, towers and guy wires.

  • Read and interpret prints, maps, drawings and other trade documents.

  • Assist in commissioning new construction for compliance and operating needs.

  • Identify and evaluate operating problems and assist in determining long term/short term solutions.

  • Perform standby duties, including emergency response.

  • Inspect and test overhead and underground power lines, cables and auxiliary equipment using electrical test equipment.

  • Safely operate heavy duty utility equipment including Radial Boom Derricks (R.B.D), bucket trucks, and related equipment as required.

  • Respond to unscheduled outages as the result of weather, component failures, etc.

  • Respond to on-call duties when required, with a maximum of 1-hour response time.


  • Valid Third Year Power Technician Apprenticeship

  • Heavy oil or oilsands experience as asset

  • Valid Class 5 vehicle operator's license

  • H2S Alive

  • CSTS-09

  • Fall Protection

  • Live line training an asset

  • Demonstrated knowledge of live line techniques using bare hand, sticks and 25kv rubber glove work

  • Strong written and verbal communication

  • Strong focus on customer satisfaction

  • Willing to join IEBW union

  • Pre-site Drug and Alcohol testing

Physical Requirements

  • Stand or walk for long periods of time

  • Work for long periods of time while working on poles

  • Ability to climb poles using foot spikes, pole belt and body belt

  • Ability to operate tools that cause vibration

  • The ability to lift 75 lbs. on a continual basis

  • The ability to be exposed to various types of work environments

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment using a variety of hand and foot controls
