Expect everyday to be different. The role works across a diverse portfolio supporting various audiences across the whole campus community. This position supports the Communications and Marketing team within the department of Facilities & Operations (F&O) in planning, executing and measuring the effectiveness of the portfolio’s communications and marketing initiatives.
This position understands F&O’s communications and marketing needs and recommends appropriate strategies and develops effective supporting collateral (digital, print, etc). In addition, this role also focuses on supporting communications planning and execution, from researching and developing original content for various communications channels and diverse audiences to editing, fact checking and proofing communications and marketing materials.

Work with the Senior Advisor, Communications & Marketing to provide writing services for the unit.
Assist with research, editing, writing, fact-checking, reviewing and publishing communications material (brochures, reports, newsletters, annual reports, news, feature stories and articles) for local, national, and international media, as well as articles for campus publications (The Quad, New Trail, Folio, etc.)
Write content in plain language and in the appropriate format (UA style guide, writing for web) to use on both print and online platforms.
Assist with developing corporate products/collateral that support F&O’s purpose, strategy, values and goals (annual reports, strategic plans, etc.).
Contributes to communications plans for specific projects or initiatives and executes on actions outlined in the plans.
Assist with media relations to uplift and maintain the university’s reputation and highlight F&O’s initiatives. This includes writing, supporting and executing media strategies, developing press releases, and creating media lists and campus mailing lists.
Plan and draft copy for promotional materials, including banners, brochures, advertisements, website sliders, etc.
Work alongside F&O’s communications and marketing team to develop marketing campaigns to raise awareness of F&O and its services.
Advise on marketing opportunities and provide appropriate content by understanding the unit’s needs and the effectiveness of various communications platforms.
Review advertising copy, and communicate with advertisers to meet deadlines and adhere to contracts.
Support the creative development and production of design projects for marketing, public relations, internal communications and recruitment materials (brochures, advertisements, posters, flyers, signage, displays, reports, and other print and digital materials).
Use creative design solutions to present new or complex ideas, conveying information in engaging and digestible ways (such as infographics) to educate intended audiences.
Identify key performance indicators and develop methods to measure performance.
Analyze executed plans and identify areas to improve effectiveness.
Contribute to and execute strategic marketing communications plans for campaigns and initiatives.
Sustain a succinct brand and visual identity for F&O and its units through a standard branding toolset.
Assist in brand management by auditing outgoing materials, making sure material design complies with the university’s visual identity guidelines and F&O’s branding standards.
Work with the Senior Advisor to provide shared services support for websites and social media across F&O’s business units.
Execute and enhance the appropriate F&O business units’ presence on websites, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and other social media, including day-to-day monitoring, engaging with followers, and scheduling original, engaging, high-quality, concise and accurate content.
Collaborate with the university’s central social media teams and develop synergistic social media partnerships with various faculties and off-campus partners.
Assist with creating, designing and updating corporate websites, newsletters and social media (using content management and scheduling systems), ensuring information is timely, well-structured, easily maintained and properly archived.
Measure and report web and social media metrics.
Monitor university news sources, and capture relevant content, using it to expand awareness of F&O’s business units’ initiatives on F&O’s websites and social media platforms.
Provide basic graphic design services during periods of high demand.
Work alongside the Senior Advisor, Communications & Marketing, consulting on graphic design, including layout, publication design, typography, colour theory, prepress and post-production processes, and brand design elements, guidelines and strategies.
Conceptualize, design and create graphic elements for digital and print material, including, photo galleries, illustrations, infographics, video clips, news stories, newsletters, brochures, advertisements, exhibits, technical diagrams, posters, promotional projects and incentives, event programs, handbills, invitations, reports, presentations, web feature images, and interactive online advertisements.
Ensure our client interactions, design layouts and visuals are professional, high-quality and credible, and ensure key design elements stay consistent across all products.
Capture or procure inspiring, high-quality portrait and event photography that shows F&O’s initiatives in action to use in designs, publications and marketing material.
Carefully prepare detailed and accurate specifications, estimates, printer proof checks and press checks.
Operate effectively as a member of the F&O communications and marketing team, working under the direction of the Senior Advisor to plan and support communications activities.
Participate in meetings to keep up-to-date on portfolio-wide activities and priorities.
Balance day-to-day challenges of keeping content current while managing multiple projects and meeting ambitious deadlines.
Collaborate with staff and colleagues to translate their requests into communications plans, and create written and graphic products that effectively deliver key messages to intended audiences (choosing the best medium, photos, colours, layout, etc.).
Coordinates publication/editorial schedules and monitors process in consultation with Senior Advisor.
Use excellent communication skills, storyboarding and other generative approaches to present solutions to clients to discuss, brainstorm or implement.
A diploma or degree in journalism, communications, professional writing, marketing, publishing or media relations.
Additional education in visual communications, graphic design or photography preferred.
At least two or three years’ experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven communications environment is preferred.
It would take 12 months to fully understand and be able to fulfill the mandate of the position.

Intermediate to advanced MS Office skills.
Experience with the Google suite is an asset.
Communications and Marketing
Exceptional skills in journalistic writing, messaging, copywriting, content marketing, storytelling and audience segmenting.
Support and execute communications plans and strategies
Superior understanding of and expertise in developing material for a wide variety of print and digital communications channels (websites, ads, newsletters, special events, brochures, videos, speeches, briefings, etc.).
Committed to quality, accuracy, detail and consistency, including adhering to brand standards.
Able to translate technical information into plain language suitable for target audiences.
Web and Social Media
Experience using content management systems and automation tools like Hootsuite.
Experience with online statistic management tools like Google Analytics.
Intermediate knowledge of HTML5, CSS3 and responsive design.
Experience sourcing, developing and managing web and social media content and strategies.
Ability to assess website usability and user experience is an asset.
Intermediate proficiency in desktop publishing and Adobe applications, including Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.
Intermediate proficiency in layout, colour theory and typography in both print and digital media, and pre-press and pre-production knowledge for print and web.
Digital SLR photography experience is an asset.
